Fifty years ago, this block on 181 & Mapes was filled with houses and buildings. Thirty-five years ago, it had become a rubble-strewn lot used by illegal dumpers. Today, it is the Mapes Athletic Field, thanks to the efforts of Astin Jacobo and the Crotona Community Coalition. A community gathering celebrated the neighborhood and its people today. (I lived in the building at left, around the corner from Felipe Figue and and Rick Marrero, and down the street from Ricky Flores).
